A beautiful antique german violin made circa 1780. Beautiful antique 18th century german violin probably made circa 1780. The top is made of two pieces of spruce and shows narrow grain lines widening towards the edges. The back is made of two parts of a very nicely flamed maple, the curl ascending from the center joint. The ribs are of the same wood. The luminous varnish is of a brown colour. The front & back are thin, and the violin has certainly been intensively played, judging by the corners which are nicely rounded by time. The neck and head have been changed during 19th century, probably by Johannes Hjorth in 1864, as we can see his repair label inside the instrument. He was a maker and the head, being very nicely made, can very well be his work. The violin is in a good restored condition, with one repaired crack at the upper right of the top, a few other marginal ones, and the button of the neck has been reset when the change was made. The varnish shows a pleasant wear. The violin has been revised and set-up, including a rosewood tailpiece with bone fret, a Despiau bridge, a sound post, a rosewood chinrest and Thomastik Dominant new strings set. The ebony pegs are older but they fit.On the inside back can be found the label "Repareret af Instrumentmager Johannes Hjorth, Frederiksberggade 11, Kjöbenhavn 1864" (repaired by the maker Johannes Hjorth...Copenhagen 1864).The sound is mature and warm, deep, with a good power, and with baroque accents : a fine polyvalent instrument that you will love !Dimensions are the following :LOB : 357 mm.Upper bouts : 165 mm.Middle bouts : 108 mm.Lower bouts : 207 mm.The instrument comes with a new rectangular case. Insured shipping to EU $50 and US $90.Happy bidding !
