20 tuned drums of graduating sizes, hanging in a circular frame, the Pat Waing in one of the worlds most incredible melodic percussion instruments. It is unique to Burma, also known now as Myanmar. It does not exist in the neighboring countries of Thailand, China, Laos, and India.
Each drum is tuned precisely with a gob of material (known as pat-sa, translated as 'drum food') in the center of the drum head, and good players can tune easily, even in performance, by pinching a bit off to raise the pitch, or adding a pinch to lower the pitch. A Pat Waing can have 18 - 21, or even more drums if there is room enough. This set has 20 drums. Most often the frame is made of heavy teakwood, and can be very bulky as well. This circular metal frame is in six sections, with one of those sections having the ‘rear entrance’. It is much much easier to transport. This set has played concerts in Burma, Amsterdam, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and more.To hear the sound and virtuosity possible with the pat waing you can try to listen to recordings of it on CDs such as Pat Waing - The Magic Drum Circle of Burma by Kyaw Kyaw Naing, White Elephants & Golden Ducks by various Burmese musician, Green Tea Leaf Salad by various musicians.....(these recordings and many more were actually recorded by me.)The total weight of the frame sections is 60 pounds, the total weight of the 20 drums is 82 pounds.Plenty of pat-sa (for tuning) is provided.Shipping to US address only. If the Buyer lives a day or two driving distance from San Francisco pick-up can be arranged, saving a lot of shipping costs. It may be quite possible to ship this with a trucking service - the buyer can look into that.Shipping with USPS ground seems the best way among the usual means. It would have to be broken into 3 boxes: One - the six frame sections - 60 pounds, 31x28x16Two and Three - would take the the total weight (82) and dimensions (36x24x14) of the 20 drums, and divide that into two boxes.Shipping this way from San Francisco to New York would be around $375, and, of course, lesser and lesser the closer the buyer is to California.
