Up for sale, a 1973 Fender Mustang in excellent condition and in good working order. Finished in the ever popular Competition Red, this Mustang is very original and well maintained. Since the pickups are essentially flat pole Stratocaster pickups with covers over the magnets, the tones are surprisingly similar, although the Mustang has the added benefit of a pair of phase switches for a very cool hollow twang when both pickups are engaged and out of phase! Featherweight at only 6lbs 12oz, the poplar body balances well on a strap too. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with a fresh set of 10-46 strings and comfortable, low action, this Mustang has an authoritative acoustic voice and plenty of chime and snap when plugged in.The neck has a medium C shaped profile that borders on the more chunky side of things, with notable curly flame figuring on the entire profile and back of the headstock, highlighted by the original gloss finish. The profile stays consistent in depth as you move into the higher registers of the fretboard and has a substantial yet fast feel. The guitar has the full 24" Mustang scale, 1 5/8" nut width, and vintage 7 1/4" fretboard radius. The guitar retains its stock fretwire for frets 3-21, while the first two frets were replaced at some point in the guitar's lifetime. The frets have been leveled and crowned, currently showing virtually no wear. These frets have plenty of life left and play cleanly in all registers with no buzzing or dead spots. On the headstock, the original Fender "F" tuning machines with white hexagonal buttons still work smoothly and hold pitch well. The electronics all work as intended, with original gray bobbin pickups that have 1973 date stamps which match the CTS pots. The "F" neck plate serial number dates to '73 as well and the heel of the neck is dated March, 1973. The original bridge is present, as well as the chrome vibrato unit. This vibrato has excellent spring tension and actuates with a light touch, jumping back to the original pitch with ease (a reissue vibrato arm is included).Cosmetically, the guitar retains its original gloss Competition Red finish which is still rich and vibrant, contrasting nicely with the original pearloid pickguard and black toggle switches. All of the original shielding plates are intact and the routes are original and untouched. The guitar shows honest play wear, with the majority of the finish chips relegated to the treble side edge of the body and lower bout near the rear strap button. Aside from the usual casual bumps and bruises most vintage instruments acquire over a 40+ year period, the guitar is in great shape and structurally sound.
