We have a confession to make... A little over a year ago, we got a '70s Luddy Stainless Steel kit in much like this one but it never saw the light of day. ADC Adam, who isn't a Zeppelin guy, not even a Bonham super-fan, we know, a questionable character right? But ADC Adam, who never shuts up about his kit, bought that Luddy. He couldn't believe the sound of it! If you haven't heard one of these in person, you probably won't either. The funny thing is, this is in much better condition than Adam's and it sounds every bit as brilliant. The robust, rounded, WARM boom still flaws us. These drums don't sound how you think. They have every bit of the warm, boomy, Luddy tone that you'd expect from one of their classic 3 ply wood shells but with an added attack that cuts when you really thump 'em! So much character, the prominent fundamental note of each drum actually makes them easy to tune too. Then there's the power. This aspect of these drums isn't immediately noticeable when you hit them. They don't seem particularly much louder than other kits but when in a band scenario, you will notice, as will those pesky string ticklers! This has come to us in brilliant condition. We have not cleaned this kit, almost all of the heads were original too! Sadly, all but the rack tom resonant head were too far gone so we have put some fresh on but that's it. The kick hoops appear to have been touched up at some point, a good job too! Apart from that, we can tell the kit hasn't actually been cleaned. We're toying with the idea of polishing it up but it looks so good anyway, we thought we'll let you decide how you'd want it. With that said, the original heads being intact, etc., it's obvious that these drums have been well looked after - we reckon these sit about 1978 so thank goodness this kit has had owners that have loved it as much as it's new owner will. The Stainless Steel range was first made in 1978 and only ran for a short number of years partly because of the sheer cost of making them - Marine-grade stainless steel was pricey. They also weren't as popular as Bill Ludwig II had hoped which is why they're so rare today, especially over this side of the water! Great condition, these kits are never perfect. This one has it's share of little dings and scuffs on each drum but as you can see, the overall picture is so good that it's very hard to care about any of it's imperfections. This is obviously a bit of a head turner, and since we've put new heads on it, we obviously had to tune it a little, everyone that walks past this kit has to hit the floor tom and are then, well, shocked is probably the word. This is staff and customers alike, *FLAM FLAM FLAM*, then a look of awe. The only things we can say about the condition really is there's the odd, most minor beginnings of pitting on some of the hardware, pretty standard for a kit this age and damn near invisible until you get up close.Condition:Rack Tom: Very good. The hardware is all pretty tidy - the most mild beginnings of pitting on the some of the hardware, barely visible. General gig-wear, that's about it. Original damper, etc., all in full working order.Floor Tom: This is in pretty much the same condition as the rack, bit of age on the lugs, etc. but again, very minor. The odd visible scuffs as you can see in image 8 but again, we haven't cleaned this kit one bit and as it's like a mirror anyway, it's hard to see any of the blips unless you're looking for them.Bass Drum: Again, very good like the other two drums, scuffs and dings etc.. As mentioned before, the hoops have been touched up and look great. The only thing that is really worth mentioning is that the tom holder plate on the bass drum has been re-threaded. It looks like it has been done well.Included:13" x 9" Late '70s Ludwig Stainless Steel Rack Tom #1802814 - Post date-stamping era16" x 16" Late '70s Ludwig Stainless Steel Floor Tom #1814323 - Post date-stamping era22" x 14" Late '70s Ludwig Stainless Steel Kick Drum #1671044 - Post date-stamping eraOriginal late '70s Stainless Steel drums, hardware, dampers, tom holder plate (no tom holder included), etc., this kit is fantastic. The striking look is matched and then-some by bags of that classic American tone. These things are rare and so damn cool. Whether you're a Bonham guy or not, these drums will knock you out. If you're dubious, find a live Zeppelin vid and see what you think, then don't think and hit buy because we may never see another one of these. We also have the Original Tom Holder for the next owner of this set which will be included although it will need a tightening screw for the bass drum plate as described above. ***There are no other drums included with this lot, only what is listed above. The snare stand is for display purposes only.***Postage and packaging to Mainland U.K. £29.99Postage and packaging to selected parts of Europe £179.99We are willing to ship world wide, please message us directly for a quote.
