Robert Carree.Regretfully, this is not correct.   See below, please....
By virtue of the fact that we’ve been an authorized dealer for Buffet-Crampon clarinets since 1953, we confirm that we have accumulated quite a number of original Buffet clarinet catalogs and price-lists.  Buffet’s current owners insist, in print and via their web-site, that the famous and well-accepted “Model R-13” clarinet was the result of the 1955 design work of Robert Carree, an employee of their workshop in Mantes. The implication is that any pre-1955 Buffet is not an R-13.  Regretfully, this is incorrect information.  In our library, we have original Buffet catalogs going back to the 1920’s.  We note that clarinets marketed before 1947 were designated “Model 13” or “No. (number) 13”.  But Buffet’s 1947 catalog clearly shows that year's current production as R-13 models. Hugo Schreiber, past president of Buffet-Crampon and (like me….) and a burned shareholder in the Tolchin Musical Instrument / Buffet-Crampon S.A. ownership, has been quoted as noting “the R-13 was a stock number going back to before 1936”. Which means that OUR firm prefers to note Buffet-Crampon’s “top of the line” clarinets made before 1947 as “model 13” and after 1947 as “model R-13”. Why it matters…  I’ve used the same late 1920’s Buffet clarinet since 1963.  In the past half century, I’ve play-tested thousands of clarinets and I’ve never found one I like better. It’s the reason I strongly recommend older “true vintage” Buffet clarinets. Better wood, better workmanship, more resonance.  In our opinion, I mean. Think of it this way…. Italian violins, French Bordeaux red wines, British sports cars, beautiful ladies and BUFFET CLARINETS are all better if they have a few years of maturity!..............  In our opinion…..
INSTRUCTIONS FOR CARE OF NEW WOOD INSTRUMENTS(CLARINETS, OBOES AND RECORDERS)
The primary causes of cracks in wood instruments are rapid changes in temperature and extreme changes in humidity.  If a wood instrument is cold on the outside and warm on the inside, or if it is dry on the outside and moist on the inside, IT WILL CRACK! In order to prevent rapid temperature changes, please observe the following: 1) Do not leave your instrument in a very cold area (such as in the trunk of a car) or in a very warm area (such as near a heating vent) for long periods of time. 2) If your instrument does become cold, do not blow warm air through it to warm it up.  If possible, let the instrument warm up gradually.  If this is not possible, blow air on the outside of the instrument before playing it. In order to prevent extreme changes in humidity, please observe the following: 1) Carry one or two commercial humidifiers (such as a Damp-it, or the kind found in tobacco shops) in the case during the dry winter months.  Check this at least once a week to be sure it is kept damp.  If you do not have a humidifier, use a damp paper towel or damp sponge. 2) Swab your instrument EVERY TIME IT IS PLAYED to remove all moisture from the inside of the instrument.  THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.  Use a commercial cotton handkerchief-type swab or a wool brush-type swab.  DO NOT USE FEATHERS!  These do not absorb moisture and are practically worthless.  If you use a handkerchief-type swab on oboes, please make sure it is long enough to pull out the same way it went in.  If you pull it through, it will get stuck. Danger Signals: If the tenon or bell rings on the instrument become loose, or if the keys begin to bind or stick, the instrument may soon crack.  If this happens, place the entire instrument in a plastic bag with a wet sponge, making sure that the sponge does not touch the keys.  Tie the bag tightly and let the instrument sit in a warm place for a day.  If this does not correct the problem, take the instrument to a repair shop IMMEDIATELY!We cannot guarantee that wood instruments will not crack.  BUT WE CAN GUARANTEE THAT THEY WILL CRACK IF THE ABOVE PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT TAKEN! If you have questions regarding the care of wood instruments, or regarding warranty or repairs of cracked instruments, please call us toll-free at 1-800-835-3006.Wichita Band’s service warranty is the same as it’s been for more than four decades:
“ALL new and all used instruments sold by Wichita Band Instrument Company come with our 24 month service warranty. It’s in addition to any factory guarantees. For two full years, we will repair or replace (whichever in our estimation is the more advisable), pads, corks, springs or other parts required, at no charge to the customer.  In the event of cracked or damaged wood sections, we will repair at no cost to the customer or replace the section and charge the customer only for our net costs for the replacement section.   Often, wood replacement parts are supplied from the manufacturer at no charge.   The customer is responsible for shipping and insurance charges. Cases and plating finishes are not covered by our service warranty but are sometimes covered by factory guarantees.”   Wichita Band Instrument Company maintains a repair department capable of restoration work of the highest quality. Even though repairs are essentially “free” for the first two years, after that period has expired, we remain at your service to maintain and repair your musical equipment forever. It’s our “service after the sale” promise and has been since 1953!   In the event that a customer requires service under factory guarantees or Wichita Band’s service warranty, the item must be returned to us and not directly to the manufacturer.

In January of 2017, our small workshop in Wichita celebrated sixty-four years in business.  We are not in the 1952 Wichita telephone directory, but we ARE in the 1953.  Over the decades, we’ve repaired and restored hundreds of woodwind instruments, specializing in 19th. century French flutes, clarinets and saxophones from the mid twentieth century and before.  We employ sixteen highly skilled full-time workers and enjoy, we’re happy to report, a sterling reputation for top-quality restoration and ethical transactions. We are not amateurs, nor are we a “back bedroom” operation.   We would be pleased to furnish you with references attesting to the above.    **** WICHITA BAND INSTRUMENT COMPANY / WICHITA, KANSAS /  USA
********************************************************************************************************Wichita Band Instrument Company is a small musical instrument emporium located in the center of the USA. We’ve been in business since 1953 and have had the same owner since 1963. Originally we were a repair shop that specialized in woodwind and sax restoration. Today we have 16 employees including six of the finest repair technicians in the country. Virtually ALL the items we sell have been fully reconditioned in our own shop, although we do sell the occasional unrestored historical instruments each year. It’s sometimes possible to buy a good saxophone on Ebay for a lower price, but unless that instrument wears all new pads and corks from a reputable shop, you won’t know how it plays until you spend another five to seven hundred to have it mechanically overhauled. With a saxophone from OUR shop, you know it’s in the finest condition when it arrives at your home! Here’s what we do to all the used clarinets we sell: The instrument is taken apart and everything washed clean. We don’t believe in chemical dips, but do use plenty of soap and water! All wood parts are inspected for checks and damage, polished and then soaked in oil for three days. After the body-shop work’s been completed, we swedge hinge-tubes tight again and re-fit to the clarinet body. Finally, pads and corks are replaced and the instrument play-tested. Most customers tell us that our clarinets are then actually mechanically better than new. Wichita Band Instrument Company maintains a repair department capable of restoration work of the highest quality. Even though repairs are essentially “free” for the first two years, after that period has expired, we remain at your service to maintain and repair your musical equipment forever. It’s our “service after the sale” promise and has been since 1953!In the event that a customer requires service under factory guarantees or Wichita Band’s service warranty, the item must be returned to us and not directly to the manufacturer. Anything we sell can be sent to you for a short approval period without obligation. We collect NO SALES TAX, unless you’re lucky enough to live in Kansas. The customer is responsible for shipping and insurance and must pre-pay back to us any freight charges on returned equipment. International shipping is available. Returned items will be refunded within 2 weeks of receiving the item. We’re happy to send any instrument on approval for five days, but ask the prospective buyer to pay shipping both ways and to please reimburse us for Ebay, clean-up and restocking charges (2.95%) on any returned instrument.
