"GT Time Capsules Discovered": Original New Old Stock, New In Box, Groove Tube's "The Brick" Tube Preamplifier upgraded with the last GT factory ECN "Fabulous Fred Mod". The "Brick.ffm" has awesome tone, adds 10+dB over the stock Bricks and also extends both the high and low frequency response...an amazing audio improvement over a stock GT Brick! The highly popular Groove Tubes Brick was already arguably one of the best Class A 3 tube preamps ever made for mics and instruments, and for studio or stage application...at any price. Fans included the top names in the industry including legendary bassist Leland Sklar, pictured here with his "great tasting" GT Brick! The Brick does a whole lot in a single, super-rugged package. Not only is The Brick the ultimate DI box and instrument preamp for injecting a bit of good ol' tube tone into your signal onstage and in the studio, it's a fantastic mic pre. Plug in your favorite mic - condenser, dynamic, or ribbon - and enjoy the unmistakable fatness you get with tube gain and hand made specially designed input and output transformers! The Brick's tube driven balanced output transformer design lets you run any instrument or mic signal over very long cable runs (up to 1,000 feet!) with no signal degradation.
This Bricks have had the very last GT factory ".ffm" modification ("Fabulous Fred Mod") which was never implemented to any production run of Bricks because Fender bought GT and discontinued all the GT audio products in 2008.
So, if you have a Brick, you do will NOT have the "Fred Mod", which increases system gain by 10+dB and extends the frequency range. However: we (APD; Aspen Pittman Designs) are offering the "Fabulous Fred Mod" to Brick owners in a separate auction. The Brick "FFM" mod is an extensive and time consuming modification and will be offered for $200 + shipping. The Brick offers lots of gain with fat tube tone and isolation for vintage keyboards, electric bass and acoustic/electric guitars with internal transducer type pickups. Plus, on-board phantom power allows the use of high quality condenser mics on stage. Best of all, The Brick is very aptly named, giving you a solid performer for live sound on stage, that's right at home in the studio.
We were fortunate to discover 10 original New In Box GT Bricks from the very last production run that have been lost in storage facility for the last 8 years. So we jumped at the chance to acquire them and have decided to upgrade them with the "Fabulous Fred Mod" to these and make them available to those GT preamp fans all over the world. Yes, The Brick can be internally converted to run from 100v (Japan) up to 230v (Australia, Europe, etc.), and we will convert them for you at no extra charge. The Story behind the Fred Mod:
During the last months of GT, after the company was sold to Fender Musical Instruments in June 2008, and before the hand off in August 2008...Aspen Pittman, the owner/founder of GT, told his GT engineers to "go play" in the engineering department and come up with some factory upgrades where ever possible. As the Brick was one product Fender indicated they would continue (but didn't), hat was a prime target for upgrade. One of the GT engineers, Fred Bova formerly with A&M studios, came up with a fabulous mod for the very popular GT Brick that corrected some original design flaws. Aspen really loved what it did for our Brick, so we named it the "Fabulous Fred Mod"(or .ffm mod). Aspen kept back about a dozen Bricks at that time and had the Fred Mod done to all of them...and still uses them daily at APR studios. The "Fabulous Fred Mod" is extensive and requires total disassembly. It takes about 1.5 hours to perform plus adds many new specialized parts, which are added and/or substituted. This mod also upgrades the GAIN pot to a special reverse audio tapper pot that allows a much finer gain adjustment. So, instead of all the gain in the last 1/4 of the pot, it is even thru out the range...and it actually improves the sound a too! Turn around time is approximately 3 working days from receipt. The Brick.fm tube preamps have higher gain (+10dB ) and extended high (and low) frequency response...and overall MUCH flatter than the original Brick circuit.See the attached "before and after" gain and frequency response graph from our Audio Precision in the picture here; the top RED line is the Brick.ffm. It has perfect flat response from 20Hz to 20KHz, plus a +10dB gain increase over the stock Brick, shown on the lower BLUE line. Notice the stock Brick has a noticeable (and audible) roll of at both ends of the frequency response curve, as compared to the Brick.fm. Groove Tubes The Brick, features at a Glance: A tube mic/instrument pre for the studio. A tube mic/instrument pre for the stage. A tube line driver. Phantom powerBalanced Transformer mic input @ 200 Ohm primary impedance
Balanced Transformer line level output driven by a selected 12AU7 (ECC82)
Available gain of +55db, or +65dB with the "Fabulous Fred Mod".Flat frequency response from 20-30KHz (with the "Fabulous Fred Mod")
