Description

Rare Harmony “Golden Jubilee” Lap Steel GuitarCirca 1936One of the first generation of commercial electric guitars. Semi-hollow body assembled from front and back halves with numerous decorative flourishes including an elaborate scroll on the headstock. A rather rare and very early Chicago-made stamped metal lap steel. Listed as a Supertone in the 1936 catalog. Utterly distinctive in both style and sound. Overall length is 36 7/8 in. (93.7 cm.), 10 1/2 in. (26.7 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 2 1/16 in. (5.2 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 25 1/8 in. (638 mm.). Width of nut is 2 in. (51 mm.). Pickup is very hot: 10.3k ohmsThese custom cases are quite rare. Most fell by the wayside over the years.Appears all original. Overall Excellent Condition. In almost 50 years of collecting guitars, I’ve only seen 9 of this model. Of which 7 were dilapidated. This one ties only one other for condition. The other is for sale at a vintage dealer for $1495. 2 quotes from the SGF: “Cast aluminum certainly was a popular material for lap steel bodies in the 1930s -- in addition to the Rickenbacher "Frying Pans," Dobro, Gibson, National, Supro and Harmony all used aluminum.”“The pickup was made by Rickenbaker for Harmony. The pickup on this guitar is most interesting in that it has 3 coils connected in series fit into a wood block with a horse-shoe magnet.”We’ve had all the other makes of aluminum bodied lap steels. This model stands out. Not only a great look, also a great sound with prolonged sustain*Please see our other listings and store for many other Vintage (Lap Steel) Guitars and Amplifiers.
