I
am disposing of a substantial collection of vintage popular sheet music from
the years 1920 thru the 1960s. This trove of Americana
includes a few more than 3,550 pieces that I have collected since the 1950s. I obtained
this music from many sources, including garage and estate sales, antique
stores, flea markets, shops that carried old stock into the 1960s, and from
friends and acquaintances. My intention
was to collect as many of the top hits of a particular year and, in that, I
have succeeded. (There follows later an
accounting of the number of pieces from specific years.) There is minimal duplication – in cases where
I have retained two copies, I have done so to preserve a significant difference
in the cover composition, for example a photo illustration featuring different
artists. The cover art runs the gamut --
from graphic illustrations and cartoon art (John Held and Disney) to photo
illustrations, portraiture, movie scenes and the like. The artists featured include almost anyone in
the entertainment world associated with popular songs during the years covered
by the collection. From bandleaders
like Guy Lombardo, the Dorseys, Ozzie Nelson and Glenn Miller and movie stars
such as Joan Crawford, Humphrey Bogart, Shirley Temple and the Marx Brothers to
international artists such as Maurice Chevalier and Ray Noble and singers like Bing
Crosby, Perry Como, Russ Columbo, Ruth Etting and Annette Hanshaw, they are all here. There are major hits and minor forgotten tunes from movies and musicals of the era. For example, covers from 1936 include songs from the following London and Broadway shows: George White Scandals of 1936, The Show Is On, This'll Make You Whistle, 27th Edition of the Cotton Club Parade, Red Hot and Blue, Forbidden Melody, White Horse Inn, New Faces, Ziegfeld Follies of 1936, Johnny Johnson, Jumbo, Connie's Hot Chocolates of 1936, and May Wine. The condition ranges from near new to
well-used. As might be expected there are sheets that
have severed spines, writing on the covers (mostly names of original owners or store stamps), corner creases, frayed edges and
other blemishes, but these are in the minority. Following are the
number of sheets from the years represented by the collection:
