Up for sale, a 1970 Big Muff Pi "Triangle Muff" in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. The Triangle Muff is the first Big Muff offered by Electro Harmonix, and this is a particularly early and clean example, with the singing sustain and rich, saturated fuzz that has made this pedal a mainstay in studios and on the road for decades. Differentiated from the first edition of the Triangle by the On/Off switch and "Tone" text on the enclosure, this V1 second edition Muff circuit is original aside from basic maintenance including a new battery snap, 1/4" jacks, and the addition of a discreet 1/8" power supply jack. The list of artists who gravitated to this particular Muff circuit early on in production is impressive, with Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, John Lennon, Steve Howe of Yes, King Crimson and more gravitating to the pedal's unique and thick tone. Infamous for the constant tweaking this circuit received while in production, there are 17 known minor variants of the Triangle Muff, and they all have a slightly unique tonal character while retaining the same general sonic footprint. This particular Muff is as thick, smooth, and articulate as they come, with scooped mids, ample bass, and detailed top end.
Cosmetically, this is an extremely clean example, with almost all of the original black silkscreen text intact, the original rubber pad on the back, and the extra tall pot shafts sometimes seen on these Muffs. The CTS pots date back to 1966, which isn't indicative of a production date in this case, but does place this pedal at around 1970, as Electro Harmonix had bought the first bulk order of potentiometers with '66 dates in 1969 and used them through 1970. The knobs are likely replacements, although it's difficult to be conclusive with this fact, as the Triangle Muff has been seen with no less than ten different knob sets from the factory.
