Up for sale, a 1964 Gibson J-50 dreadnought acoustic in exceptional condition. With a few J-50's shipped in 1942, the model was officially launched in 1947 as a sister model to the J-45 as part of the J series, designed to compete with Martin's similar round shoulder D series. Whereas the J-45 exclusively had a black sunburst finish, by 1947 the newly released J-50 came in a natural finish to show off the (now triple bound) quality spruce being used on the top! Known for its warm bass sound and good projection as well as outstanding playability, this particular instrument delivers on the promise of the J-50 legacy with incredible tone. With a solid spruce top and mahogany back and sides, the wood in this guitar has aged to perfection, producing an incredibly complex and full sound. Chords ring out in a beautiful way that's both clear and articulate with the smooth attack and warmth that comes from a soft shoulder Gibson. This instrument has been recently setup and dialed in, with fresh phosphor bronze 12-53 strings and all the the tonal qualities you desire from a soulful vintage Gibson dreadnought. The one-piece mahogany neck retains its original smooth gloss nitro lacquer finish with a dark walnut tint and moderately deep C profile that feels substantial and solid without venturing into "baseball bat" territory. The Brazilian rosewood fretboard sports very clean original fretwire which has been professionally dressed and crowned with plenty of height and life left.  Currently, the frets show virtually no wear and the guitar plays cleanly up the neck with no fret buzz or dead spots. The nut boasts a full 1 11/16" width, ideal for chording comfortably and for fingerstyle playing. On the headstock, this J-50 retains a clean and original gold "Gibson" silkscreen on the face along with the original truss rod cover. The original Kluson Deluxe single line tuners are intact as well and turn smoothly with their original white buttons. The original Brazilian rosewood bridge bass and adjustable saddle are intact, along with all six stock bridge pins. The bridge base is firmly adhered to the top on all edges, and is a particularly stripey and eye-catching piece of rosewood as well. As seen in photo #7, the saddle is raised up higher than most to compensate for a moderate amount of dip in the top between the soundhole and the bridge. All braces have recently been addressed, the top is structurally sound, and it's not uncommon to see some deflection in Gibson dreadnought tops. Suffice it to say that the action will be low and comfortable for decades to come, with plenty of height at the saddle for future adjustment, and an original neck angle that will serve this guitar well without a reset. The original reddish transparent "tortoise" pickguard is intact and looks fantastic; contrasting nicely with the solid, bookmatched spruce top.  The neck angle is ideal, and this guitar has also never required a neck reset.  The original nitro lacquer finish is 100% original with no touchups or overspray, and this is a particularly well cared for instrument in terms of cosmetic wear. There are two professionally repaired cracks on the bass side of the body between the upper bout and waist, both of which are parallel to the grain and pose no structural issue. The back and sides are crack-free, and the instrument shows only faint lacquer checking across the top and some assorted light finish scratches and dings on the back. Visible through the soundhole, the original "J50 Adj. Bridge" text is still cleanly inked on the interior center seam on the back. Overall, this J-50 looks great, sounds particularly good, and has received all the necessary maintenance due an instrument of its age.The original red plush lined chipboard case with small Gibson badge on the interior is included.
