Interesting Old Violin ca. 1910 from the Famous French Workshop JTL Labelled Compagnon Photo gallery
This violin underscores the high standards maintained by the French firm of Jérôme Thibouville-Lamy (JTL) from the mid-19th to early-20th centuries. They produced instruments in different models, aimed at various levels of performance, using different generic names on their labels to denote the model, but always bearing the distinctive logo of a lyre with light beams emitting from it.
For many years JTL set the French standard for high-quality trade instruments. Many important French violin makers at some point either worked for this company, or served on its directorship. Its instruments are greatly respected, not only for the excellent materials used in their production, but also for the fine workmanship displayed in the majority of their output.
An especially beautiful and fine sounding antique French Violin It was part of the “Compagnon” line, a very successful J.T.L series that can be compared to his famous “Médio Fino” instruments. The violin top is crafted of moderately grained spruce, and one-piece back of sycamore maple – good tone woods covered by a warm, bright varnish in a light golden orange. Workmanship throughout is tidy, conforming to the standards of good French lutherie. Its perfectly maintained condition, few blemishes and scratches, the head of the scroll is chipped. The violin can be played immediately and was fitted with a new bridge, sound post, ebony tailpiece and Thomastik Dominant strings. This wonderful French violin has a smooth, bright, and rich, tone! We can warmly recommend this instrument. This violin is an excellent addition for any collectionist/violinist/student.
