A very rare, fine violin made by Mathias Albani ca. 1670. Mathias Albani considered to be a maker of Bolzano. Bolzano was an important city and a crossroad for the trade between Venice and Augsburg. The Romans built a settlement there in 15 BC. With the end of the Roman empire Bavarian count began to be mentioned as a ruler in Bolzano. Before the World War I Bolzano was a part of  Austro-Hungarian county of Tyrol. After the World War I Bolzano  became a provincial capital and part of Italy. Bolzano is located around 230 km from Cremona where according with William Henley Mathias Albani went to master his skills in the Amati shop. This is probably correct, because it is clear that for example the scroll of this particular instrument is so close to the work of G.B. Rogeri who was probably working in the same shop at that time. The similarities with Cremonese techniques obvious in details of the work such as the way how lining is inserted to the corner blocks, pin placements in the back and and much more.  The varnish composition of the varnish is soft and marvelous in appearance, similar to the great Venetian instruments.
This is a superb example of the maker's work in a fine state of preservation with some normal for the age wear and repairs. The instrument has a specially generous amount of the original magnificent varnish that it is exciting to observe today. The sound of this instrument is
combining a wonderful timbre with great power, richness and brilliance to the level of the instruments made by great old Italian masters from the period. This masterpiece is definitely a concert instrument and a rare opportunity for a collector. The length over the back is 35.5 cm.
This instrument will be sold with an appraisal and a certificate of authenticity.
