07/03/16 Due to a number of questions, I have done research to answers for the most often requested information. Please see last paragraph of description. Thank you. I am offering for sale a real 1939 D-18 at a price to sell it. This is a great sounding and looking guitar albeit not total as original, to your advantage, you'll find it to be priced accordingly I believe. It is apparently a factory refinish or better. In 2009, the top which had been sanded to thin (the original top will also go with the guitar), was replaced with a very nice piece of Adirondack Spruce, utilizing most of the original braces, and original tortoise binding. I don't know who did the work but it was obviously an expert luthier. It is beautiful work. The pick guard appears to be a greven or comparable, bridge is an excellent reproduction. The finish on the top is slightly tinted. Now for the good stuff. It is an early 39 so it has the wide 1 3/4" width neck at the nut, 2 3/16" string spacing at the bridge. The neck is comfortable like the 37 and 38"s. The fingerboard shows no evidence of sanding and shows no finger divits and the frets have plenty of life in them. I believe the reason the fb and frets show no wear is that this guitar received very little playing. You'll see how I reached that conclusion when you see the lack of play wear on the original top. There appear to be no cracks anywhere on this guitar and the color on the back, sides, and neck is a beautiful rich mahogany. The tuners are original and the nut appears to be original. The action is what I would term medium bluegrass height while retaining a good deal of saddle height for lowering if so desired. Perhaps the best part is that this guitar sounds great. Nice and open and real punchy mids with clear lows and it has not been played hardly at all. I really would expect this guitar to come amazingly alive when it begins to be played. It comes with a period hard case though I'm not sure if it is original to this guitar. As I said the original top will come with it and two original braces that were not re-usable on the new top. I have described to the best of my ability but if I am not clear or you have an unanswered question, don't hesitate to call me. I have several pictures as well. If you are after the pre 39 wide neck and pre war sound but on a limited budget, this guitar might just be for you. Good luck on your quest for that just right guitar. Serial number is 72702. Chris Bozung in Fairfield, Tn. Replaced the top in 2009. The guitar was refinished by the Martin factory in 1965. All work looks like it came from the factory that way. The original kerfing was saved and used with what appears a perfect joining surface to the top. The 2 braces that make the center X brace were replaced and the scalloping matches the scalloping on the original X braces that will be sent with the guitar along with the original top. All the other braces are the original braces. The bridge plate appears to be meticulously made to original specs. I see no hint of glue overrun anywhere inside to tell if the glue used was a form of hide glue or a titebond type. Thank you.
